How to write S.M.A.R.T. goals!

by Chris, Employment Coordinator

Have you ever wanted to set a goal for yourself, but never knew where to start? The first thing you need to do is come up with a plan that is clear-cut and easy to follow. Goals that are thoughtful and well structured are not only helpful, but smart too! You can even use the word SMART to write these goals for yourself. Here’s how!

“S” stands for Specific, so figure out exactly what you want to do and write it down in a journal or logbook. Studies show that people are more likely to succeed when they have written goals—and more so when they share weekly progress reports with a friend!

“M” stands for Measurable. You’ll need a way to measure your progress—for example, maybe your goal is to make one new friend per week or eat one serving of vegetables every day. If you’re finding it difficult to track your progress, you may need to redefine your goals in greater detail.

“A” stands for Achievable. It is important to set realistic expectations—aim for a challenge, but not one for the book of world records. Try something you already know is possible!

“R” stands for Relevant. Set goals that will better yourself as a person and as a leader. Brushing up on your interview skills will do more for your future than playing video games!

“T” stands for Time. Set aside reasonable time to accomplish your goals. Mark a date on your calendar or use a timer to hold yourself to a deadline!
